Male-pattern hair loss (or Androgenetic Alopecia) is the most common form of hair loss in men. It usually starts on the sides, near the front, or on the top of the head toward the back. Eventually, the two balding areas meet to form a typical U-shape.

Will it happen to you? The best way to predict is to look at your male relatives on both sides of the family. If they're balding, ask them when it started. It can begin as early as in your 20s. By age 50, 50% of men would already have noticeable hair loss.

Scientists believe a male sex hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a key factor in male-pattern hair loss. As you age, DHT starts to build up around your hair follicle. DHT causes hair follicle to shrink until it no longer produces hair. This process slowly depletes your stock of hair leading to permanent hair loss. Studies showed balding men have high levels of DHT in their scalp.
